Step-by-step guide to creating assignments for your classes

Creating Assignments

The Creating Assignments section allows you to create assignments for your classes, set deadlines, add instructions, and configure submission requirements.

Overview

Creating Assignments enables you to:

  • Create new assignments for your classes
  • Set assignment titles and descriptions
  • Configure deadlines and due dates
  • Add detailed instructions
  • Set submission requirements
  • Attach files or resources
  • Preview assignments before publishing

Creating a New Assignment

Step 1: Access Assignment Creation

  1. Log in to the teacher dashboard
  2. Click on "Creating Assignments" or "Create Assignment" in the navigation menu
  3. Click the "Create New Assignment" button

Step 2: Select Class

  1. Choose the class for this assignment from the dropdown
  2. You can only create assignments for classes you're assigned to teach
  3. Select one class per assignment

Step 3: Enter Assignment Details

Fill in the assignment information:

Basic Information

  • Assignment Title: Clear, descriptive title (e.g., "Chapter 5 Math Problems")
  • Description: Detailed description of what students need to do
  • Instructions: Step-by-step instructions for completing the assignment

Due Date and Time

  1. Click on the "Due Date" field
  2. Select the deadline date from the calendar
  3. Set the due time (e.g., 11:59 PM)
  4. The system will show time remaining until deadline

Set realistic deadlines that give students adequate time to complete the assignment. Consider class schedules and other assignments.

Step 4: Configure Submission Settings

Submission Requirements

Configure how students submit work:

  • File Upload: Allow students to upload files
  • Text Submission: Allow text-based submissions
  • Both: Allow both file and text submissions

If allowing file uploads:

  • Allowed File Types: Select accepted formats (PDF, DOC, DOCX, etc.)
  • Maximum File Size: Set size limit (e.g., 10MB)
  • Number of Files: Allow single or multiple file uploads

Step 5: Set Grading Information

Points and Weight

  1. Enter Total Points for the assignment (e.g., 100 points)
  2. Set Weight if using weighted grading (optional)
  3. This helps students understand assignment value

Add grading criteria or rubric:

  • What you'll be looking for
  • Point breakdown for different aspects
  • Expectations for full credit

Step 6: Add Resources (Optional)

  1. Click "Add Resource" or "Attach File"
  2. Upload helpful resources:
    • Reference materials
    • Example solutions
    • Reading materials
    • Templates or worksheets
  3. Students can download these when viewing the assignment

Step 7: Preview Assignment

  1. Click "Preview" to see how students will view the assignment
  2. Review all information for accuracy
  3. Check formatting and instructions

Step 8: Publish Assignment

  1. Review all entered information
  2. Click "Publish" or "Create Assignment"
  3. The assignment will be immediately available to students
  4. Students will be notified about the new assignment

Accessing Assignment Editor

  1. Go to your assignments list
  2. Find the assignment you want to edit
  3. Click "Edit" button

Making Changes

You can edit:

  • Assignment title and description
  • Instructions
  • Due date (if not yet passed)
  • Submission requirements
  • Grading information
  • Resources

Editing Limitations

Once students have submitted work, some changes may be restricted. Contact your administrator if you need to make significant changes to an assignment with submissions.

Managing Assignments

Viewing Your Assignments

  1. Navigate to "My Assignments" or "Assignments"
  2. View all assignments you've created:
    • Active assignments
    • Past assignments
    • Draft assignments

Assignment Status

Assignments can have different statuses:

  • Draft: Not yet published
  • Active: Published and accepting submissions
  • Closed: Past due date, no longer accepting submissions
  • Graded: All submissions have been graded

Best Practices

Troubleshooting

Issue: Cannot create assignment for a class

  • Solution: Verify you're assigned as the teacher for that class. Contact administrator if needed.

Issue: Due date not saving

  • Solution: Ensure you've selected both date and time. Check that the date is in the future.

Issue: File upload not working for resources

  • Solution: Check file size and format. Ensure your internet connection is stable.

Issue: Assignment not appearing for students

  • Solution: Verify the assignment was published (not saved as draft). Check that students are enrolled in the class.
